Overview

Eola-Amity Hills AVA follows a chain of hills in the central Willamette Valley, extending from the Eola Hills near Salem north toward Amity. Vineyards occupy east-, west-, and south-facing slopes above the valley floor, with elevation and exposure changing along the ridge system.

Its most recognizable climatic influence is afternoon marine air entering through the Van Duzer Corridor in the Coast Range. Wind can lower temperatures, dry vine canopies, and thicken grape skins, while sheltered sites experience the effect differently. Seasonal rainfall, heat, and frost remain vintage-dependent.

Basalt-derived volcanic soils occur widely, accompanied by marine sedimentary formations and localized windblown material. Soil depth, clay content, drainage, and bedrock exposure vary across slopes, preventing one soil description from representing the entire AVA.

Pinot Noir dominates and commonly combines ripe fruit with acidity and structural definition. Chardonnay has grown in prominence, while Pinot Gris and other cool-climate varieties contribute additional styles. Eola-Amity Hills is nested inside Willamette Valley AVA and neighbors the Van Duzer Corridor AVA without being identical to it.
