Gevrey-Chambertin AOC

Gevrey-Chambertin AOC lies at the northern end of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits, primarily within Gevrey-Chambertin and neighboring Brochon. Vineyards extend from the base of the wooded limestone escarpment across mid-slope sites, alluvial fans, and lower ground toward the plain.

Pinot Noir is the appellation's grape and red wine its sole color. East and southeast exposures, slope position, altitude, and airflow affect ripening in Burgundy's cool semi-continental climate. Limestone, marl, gravel, and deeper lower-slope soils create meaningful differences in drainage and vine growth.

The village appellation includes numerous Premier Cru climats. Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, and the other local Grands Crus are separate appellations with their own boundaries; they are not simply the highest tier inside every bottle labeled Gevrey-Chambertin.

This structure should preserve village, Premier Cru climat, Grand Cru AOC, vineyard, producer, and wine as related but distinct entities. That hierarchy explains why one commune can support an unusually broad range of origins and reputations. Labeling may further identify an approved climat for village or Premier Cru wine, but the presence of a vineyard name does not change its formal appellation level. Producer holdings are also highly fragmented. Connecting each wine to both its producer and exact origin reveals relationships that a simple village profile cannot carry.
