Lodi AVA is a large, productive California winegrowing area east of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. Warm Mediterranean conditions, cooling Delta airflow, extensive alluvial landscapes, old vineyards, and seven nested AVAs support Zinfandel alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Rhône, Spanish, Italian, and other varieties.

Overview

Lodi AVA lies in California's Central Valley directly east of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, principally across San Joaquin and Sacramento counties. Its broad landscape includes floodplains, alluvial fans, terraces, rolling eastern ground, and river corridors descending from the Sierra Nevada.

Warm sunny days and dry summers support reliable ripening, while air drawn inland through the Golden Gate and Delta can cool evenings and moderate seasonal heat. Exposure to that influence decreases toward higher eastern sectors, contributing to meaningful differences within the large appellation.

Alluvial soils vary from deep sandy loams near the Mokelumne River to older reddish clay loams, gravel, hardpan, and volcanic or metamorphic material farther east. These differences helped define seven nested AVAs: Alta Mesa, Borden Ranch, Clements Hills, Cosumnes River, Jahant, Mokelumne River, and Sloughhouse.

Lodi is strongly associated with Zinfandel and surviving old vineyards, including own-rooted vines in deep sand, but its production base is much broader. Numerous Mediterranean and international grapes support red, white, rosé, and sparkling wines at varied scales. Geography & Climate

The AVA occupies broad inland terrain east of the Delta, including the Mokelumne and Cosumnes river systems, low floodplains, terraces, alluvial fans, and rolling ground toward the Sierra foothills.

Soils

Soils include deep sandy loam, younger silty alluvium, reddish gravelly clay loam, hardpan, cobbles, and older volcanic or metamorphic deposits. Their distribution distinguishes the seven nested AVAs.

Wine Styles

Zinfandel is a signature, including wines from old vineyards, but Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Petite Sirah, Rhône, Spanish, Italian, and other grapes support diverse styles.
