Overview

Los Carneros occupies the southern reaches of Napa and Sonoma counties, where rolling hills descend toward San Pablo Bay. Unlike many appellations defined around a single county or valley, its boundary crosses political lines to follow a shared cool-climate landscape.

Bay winds and marine air moderate summer temperatures and slow ripening. Vineyards range from near sea level to exposed foothills, so wind, slope, and proximity to the bay create meaningful differences within the appellation. The coolest sites are especially suited to grapes for sparkling wine and still wines with retained acidity.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir form the clearest regional identity, appearing in traditional-method sparkling wines as well as still expressions. Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc add breadth in warmer or more protected locations. Because Los Carneros overlaps several broader AVAs, its graph relationships should show its shared Napa–Sonoma geography rather than assign it exclusively to either county's wine identity.

Clay-rich soils predominate, including shallow loams over dense clay subsoils. Their water-holding capacity can sustain vines into the dry season, while shallow profiles and hardpan restrict rooting and help limit vigor.

Wine Styles

Los Carneros is best known for fresh Chardonnay, aromatic Pinot Noir, and traditional-method sparkling wines with firm acidity. Sheltered sites also produce supple Merlot and smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc.
