Overview

Stags Leap District forms a small “valley within a valley” about six miles north of the city of Napa. The appellation is bounded by the rocky Stags Leap Palisades to the east and the Napa River corridor to the west, concentrating vineyards into a narrow strip of floor, fans, and foothills.

Bare rock and warm daytime conditions promote ripening, while afternoon wind and evening marine air move north from San Pablo Bay. This rapid cooling produces a long season with warm days and cool nights, particularly well suited to late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cabernet Sauvignon dominates and is associated with a distinctive combination of density and polished texture. Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc provide smaller complementary expressions. Volcanic gravel loams, alluvial fan material, rocky slopes, and clay subsoils vary over short distances, reinforcing the importance of vineyard links within this compact AVA.

Geography & Climate

The district is approximately three miles long and one mile wide, lying between the Napa River and the Stags Leap Palisades. It includes low valley terrain, an alluvial fan, rocky knolls, and foothills rising to about 400 feet.

Soils

Volcanic gravel loams and alluvial deposits occur on the floor and fan, with sandstone, shale, and rocky material on adjoining slopes. Hard clay subsoils contribute low-to-moderate fertility and restricted rooting.

Wine Styles

The signature style is concentrated yet supple Cabernet Sauvignon with ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and refined tannins. Merlot supports both varietal wines and blends, while Sauvignon Blanc adds a smaller white-wine tradition.
