Overview

Umpqua Valley AVA occupies southwestern Oregon around the North and South Umpqua rivers and their tributaries. Its landscape is often described as a region of many valleys, formed where the Coast Range, Cascades, and Klamath Mountains approach one another around Roseburg and surrounding communities.

The northern portion receives stronger maritime influence, while southern and interior sites become warmer and drier. Mountain barriers, river corridors, elevation, and valley orientation create rapid climatic changes. Spring frost, seasonal rain, summer heat, drought, and wildfire smoke can affect individual vintages.

The geologically complex area includes alluvial river soils, sedimentary formations, volcanic materials, clay loams, gravel, and rocky uplands. No single soil description represents the entire AVA.

Pinot Noir, Riesling, and other cool-climate grapes perform in cooler sectors, while Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot, Albariño, and Viognier reflect warmer locations. The range of grapes mirrors the appellation's climatic transitions. Elkton Oregon and Red Hill Douglas County are nested AVAs with more specific identities. The appellation follows the Umpqua river system through a complex landscape around Roseburg. Numerous valleys, ridges, and foothills reflect the convergence of three major mountain provinces.

Alluvial loams and gravels, marine sedimentary formations, volcanic materials, clay-rich soils, and rocky uplands occur across the AVA. Parent material and drainage change sharply among valleys.

Wine Styles

Cooler sectors support Pinot Noir and Riesling; warmer sectors support Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot, Albariño, Viognier, and other grapes. Styles range widely with site and producer.
