Overview

Walla Walla Valley AVA surrounds the city of Walla Walla and crosses the Washington-Oregon border within the larger Columbia Valley. The broad western valley rises eastward toward the Blue Mountain foothills, while river drainages, rolling farmland, terraces, and upland slopes create multiple vineyard settings.

The appellation is cooler and wetter than many Washington growing areas, but rainfall varies considerably from the dry west to the higher eastern edge. Most vineyards still depend on irrigation, although a limited number of wetter foothill sites can be dry-farmed. Elevation, wind, slope, and distance from the mountains further divide local conditions.

Red grapes dominate, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. Sandy loess over flood sediments and fractured basalt is widespread, while the southern Oregon sector includes ancient cobblestone river deposits recognized separately as The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA.

Walla Walla Valley is both a growing area and an important winery center. Its graph relationships should distinguish Washington and Oregon vineyard sites, nested areas, grapes, and producers while retaining the shared cross-border valley identity. Those distinctions matter because winery location does not necessarily identify grape origin, and the appellation boundary crosses a state line. The AVA occupies a broad valley and surrounding slopes in southeastern Washington and northeastern Oregon. It rises toward the Blue Mountain foothills in the east and includes river drainages, terraces, rolling loess-covered hills, and a cobblestone alluvial fan in the south.

Soils

Well-drained sandy loess commonly overlies Missoula Flood slackwater deposits and fractured basalt. Above the flood line, loess rests more directly on basalt. Southern vineyards in The Rocks District occupy dense, heat-absorbing Freewater-series cobblestones.

Wine Styles

Walla Walla Valley is best known for structured Cabernet Sauvignon, supple Merlot, savory Syrah, and red blends. Differences in elevation, rainfall, and cobblestone or loess soils create meaningful stylistic variation across the appellation.
