Overview

Yakima Valley AVA follows the Yakima River through south-central Washington and forms a large sub-appellation within Columbia Valley. Ridges, foothills, benches, and the river corridor divide the area into multiple growing environments. Irrigation water comes from the Yakima River system and local aquifers.

The western valley and sectors near the Cascade foothills are relatively cool, while areas toward the central Columbia Basin can be much warmer. Low rainfall, sunny growing seasons, elevation, slope, and cold-air movement create differences in ripening and frost exposure. This range supports important acreage of both white and red grapes.
