Beaune AOC
Beaune AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. Beaune AOC surrounds Burgundy’s historic wine capital with a large Premier Cru mosaic producing mostly red Pinot Noir and some white Chardonnay.
Overview
Vineyards arc across slopes west of the city from the Savigny valley toward Pommard. The long hillside’s changing exposure and limestone-marl soils create diverse Pinot Noir, from fragrant and supple to deep and structured, alongside rounded, fresh Chardonnay.
History
Beaune’s role as a medieval wine center and commercial capital is inseparable from its vineyards, whose communal AOC was recognized in 1936.
Geography
The appellation forms a broad east- and southeast-facing slope immediately west of Beaune, divided among numerous named climats.
Climate
Continental weather, morning sun, and varying elevation shape a wide range of mesoclimates along the extended hillside.
Soils
Jurassic limestone and marl generate brown calcareous soils with variable clay, gravel, and slope deposits.
Wine styles
Red Pinot Noir predominates and spans many styles; white Chardonnay is less common but can be rich, fresh, and ageworthy.
Notable features
Beaune combines one of Burgundy’s largest concentrations of Premier Cru land with the region’s historic commercial center.
