Clos de Vougeot AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a vast historic walled vineyard producing red Pinot Noir across a complex slope and soil mosaic.
Overview
The clos fills much of Vougeot, descending from shallow gravelly limestone near Musigny and Grands Échezeaux through clayier broken limestone to deep marl-rich alluvium. This variation creates diverse red Pinot Noir united by concentration, structure, and aging potential.
History
Cistercian monks established the vineyard around 1110 and enclosed it over subsequent centuries; its intact walls and château embody Burgundy’s monastic heritage, with Grand Cru status protected in 1937.
Geography
The large walled vineyard slopes gently eastward from roughly 255 to 240 meters in the heart of the Côte de Nuits.
Climate
Continental weather and eastern exposure affect a broad vertical range, with drainage and frost risk varying markedly from top to bottom.
Soils
Shallow gravel over limestone at the top gives way to clay-rich broken limestone centrally and deep marl, clay, and alluvium below.
