Échezeaux AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. Échezeaux Grand Cru produces red Pinot Noir from a broad mosaic of climats above Flagey-Échezeaux.
Overview
Between Vougeot and Vosne-Romanée, Échezeaux stretches from roughly 230 to above 300 meters across broken slopes and numerous named climats. Diverse marl, gravel, red alluvium, and limestone soils yield fragrant, generous Pinot Noir with spice, supple power, and site-dependent complexity.
History
The name derives from a Gallo-Roman term for a group of dwellings; its component climats were united under Grand Cru protection in 1937.
Geography
The appellation occupies varied east-facing slopes above Flagey-Échezeaux, beside Musigny and Grands Échezeaux.
Climate
Continental conditions interact with a wide elevation range and changing exposures, producing meaningful differences in ripening.
Soils
Bajocian marl, pebbly overlays, red alluvium, gravel, and yellow marl form a complex Jurassic soil mosaic.
Wine styles
Red Pinot Noir exclusively, often floral and spicy when young, gaining savory and earthy complexity with age.
