La Romanée AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. La Romanée Grand Cru is a minute, steep monopole above Romanée-Conti producing rare and highly concentrated red Pinot Noir.
Overview
The tiny Vosne-Romanée vineyard climbs a pronounced east-facing slope above Romanée-Conti. Less clay-rich brown limestone soils over hard Premeaux limestone foster perfumed, precise Pinot Noir with red fruit, spice, mineral tension, and remarkable depth.
History
The protected vineyard identity developed from the historic Romanée slope and was formally recognized as a Grand Cru AOC in 1936.
Geography
The monopole occupies a steep roughly twelve-percent east-facing slope high on the Vosne-Romanée grand-cru band.
Climate
Continental seasons, altitude, steep drainage, and morning sun encourage measured ripening and concentrated fruit.
Soils
Relatively shallow brown limestone soil with less clay than Romanée-Conti rests on Jurassic Premeaux limestone.
