Maranges AOC
Maranges AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. Maranges AOC produces mostly red Pinot Noir and some white Chardonnay across three villages at the southern gateway to the Côte de Beaune.
Overview
Cheilly-lès-Maranges, Dezize-lès-Maranges, and Sampigny-lès-Maranges share an amphitheater of south- and southeast-facing slopes. Clay-limestone and marl soils give robust, fruit-driven reds and fresh, rounded whites.
History
The three villages’ appellations were consolidated under the Maranges name in 1989, creating the Côte de Beaune’s southernmost village AOC.
Geography
Vineyards curve around the Cozanne valley in Saône-et-Loire, continuing the slopes south of Santenay.
Climate
Continental weather combines with favorable southern exposures and valley airflow; altitude moderates the warmest sites.
Soils
Jurassic limestone, marl, clay, and gravel create varied but generally well-drained hillside soils.
Wine styles
Red Pinot Noir dominates, typically colorful and structured; limited white Chardonnay offers freshness and body.
Notable features
Maranges is the Côte de Beaune’s southernmost communal appellation and the only one centered in Saône-et-Loire.
