Douro
The Douro is a mountainous wine region in northeastern Portugal where terraced vineyards follow the Douro River and its tributaries. Schist-dominated slopes, hot dry summers, local grape varieties, and three contrasting subregions support both fortified Port and unfortified Douro red, white, and rosé wines.
Notable factThe Douro's eighteenth-century demarcation created an early regulated geographic wine region, later divided into Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo, and Douro Superior.
