South Australia
South Australia is the country's largest wine-producing state and contains regions including Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra, and Riverland. Warm inland districts, maritime influence, elevation, old vineyards, and varied soils support Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Grenache, Chardonnay, and many other grapes.
Notable factThe state produces close to half of Australian wine and retains some of the country's oldest surviving vines, aided historically by quarantine from phylloxera.
