Alsace AOC is the region's principal protected origin for still wine, produced along the eastern foothills of the Vosges Mountains. A dry rain-shadow climate, varied geology, aromatic grape varieties, varietal labeling, and recognized village and lieu-dit names shape its distinctive identity.

Overview

Alsace AOC extends along slopes and foothills on the eastern side of the Vosges, overlooking the upper Rhine basin. Most vines grow on foothills and slopes near historic villages, generally between about 200 and 400 metres. South- and southeast-facing sites receive strong sunlight, while elevation, valleys, and slope orientation create numerous local exposures.

The Vosges shield the vineyards from Atlantic rain, producing a sunny, dry, semi-continental climate with warm summers, cold winters, and long autumn ripening. Large differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures can preserve acidity and aromatic detail as grapes mature.

Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir provide much of the appellation's varietal vocabulary. Unlike most French regions, the grape commonly appears prominently on the label. Wines range from dry and fresh to powerful, off-dry, or sweet, depending on grape, site, vintage, and harvest designation.

Alsace AOC may include approved communal and lieu-dit geographic names under specific rules. Alsace Grand Cru and Crémant d'Alsace are separate appellations. This structure must preserve those legal distinctions while linking wines to villages, sites, grapes, producers, and the broader Alsace region. Harvest terms require similar care. Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles describe regulated late-harvest categories that may accompany qualifying Alsace or Alsace Grand Cru wines; they are not standalone geographic areas. Modeling them separately prevents sweetness, grape variety, and origin from being collapsed into one label concept.

Geography & Climate

The appellation occupies the eastern Vosges foothills and adjoining piedmont, running north to south through a sequence of hills, valleys, slopes, and village vineyards above the Rhine plain. Elevation and aspect change repeatedly along the corridor.

Soils

The region contains a varied mosaic of granite, limestone, marl, sandstone, schist, volcanic material, clay, loess, and alluvial soils. Their drainage, heat storage, depth, and water supply differ sharply across short distances and named sites.

Wine Styles

Alsace AOC produces dry, aromatic Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Pinot Blanc, and Sylvaner, plus Pinot Noir reds and rosés. Late-harvest and noble-berry designations identify richer sweet styles when their specific requirements are met.
