Overview
Ave occupies the Ave River valley from the coast near Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim eastward through Famalicão toward Guimarães. The subregion sits between Cávado to the north and Sousa to the south, sharing the granite landscape and Atlantic climate common to the coastal belt of Vinho Verde.
Loureiro and Arinto are the primary white varieties, with Azal contributing acidity in blends. The combination produces fresh, high-acid whites with the aromatic character associated with northwest Portugal. Vinhão is the main red variety and appears in both varietal and blended reds.
Guimarães, regarded as the birthplace of the Portuguese nation, anchors the inland edge of the subregion, giving Ave historical depth alongside its viticultural identity. The Ave valley's mixed agricultural and urban character is typical of the densely settled coastal Minho.
