Overview

Vinho Verde occupies Portugal's Minho province, stretching from the Lima and Minho river valleys near Galicia south toward Porto and east toward Trás-os-Montes. The region is one of Europe's largest by area under vine and by total production volume, encompassing nine subregions with meaningfully different maritime, riverine, and inland characters.

Atlantic proximity keeps temperatures moderate, but the region's geography is not uniform. Coastal and river-valley sectors receive strong Atlantic influence, while inland subregions such as Baião and Paiva are more sheltered, warmer, and drier. Granite soils, schist outcrops, and sandy coastal terrain each shape different viticultural outcomes.

Alvarinho is the region's most internationally recognized variety, associated especially with the Monção e Melgaço subregion near the Spanish border. Loureiro, Arinto, Trajadura, Azal, Avesso, and Padeiro round out a large portfolio of native grapes used in both varietal and blended wines. Reds and rosés from Vinhão, Espadeiro, and Azal Tinto also carry regional identity.

The Vinho Verde DOP covers white, red, rosé, and sparkling styles. Subregion designations are permitted and increasingly used.
