Overview

Sousa occupies the valley of the Sousa River, a Douro tributary flowing south of Porto through the municipalities of Lousada, Paços de Ferreira, and Felgueiras. It sits between the Ave subregion to the north and Paiva to the south, sharing the granitic Atlantic character of the coastal Vinho Verde belt while occupying terrain that begins to transition toward the Douro margin.

The subregion's production is mixed, drawing on a portfolio of native white varieties including Loureiro, Arinto, and Azal, which together produce fresh, high-acid whites in the regional tradition. Vinhão is grown for red wine production alongside Espadeiro and Padeiro. Commercial output contributes to the broader Vinho Verde market without the specialized single-variety identity of Monção e Melgaço or Baião.

Sousa is a less internationally prominent subregion than Lima, Monção e Melgaço, or Baião, but it represents the dense network of small-scale viticulture that has historically defined the Minho's wine culture. Smallholding vineyards, pergola training, and mixed farming remain part of its agricultural landscape.

Wine Styles

Fresh, high-acid white blends from Loureiro, Arinto, and Azal are the principal production style. Red wines from Vinhão and other native red varieties follow the traditional Vinho Verde red model of deep color and firm tannin.
