Overview

Cávado runs from the Atlantic coast at Esposende inland through the Cávado River corridor toward Braga. The city of Braga anchors the interior end of the subregion, and the landscape transitions from coastal lowlands and river plains to steeper hillside vineyard terrain as the valley narrows.

The subregion produces a broad range of Vinho Verde styles. White blends of Loureiro, Arinto, and Trajadura are common, while Vinhão is the principal red variety, producing deeply colored, tannic red wines characteristic of the northwest. Volume production is significant, and Cávado contributes substantially to the commercial Vinho Verde market.

Atlantic influence shapes the entire subregion, with high rainfall distributed across the year and mild temperatures moderated by sea air. Inland sites near Braga experience slightly less direct maritime exposure but remain firmly within the Atlantic climate zone of northern Portugal.
