Overview

Lima occupies the valley of the Lima River from the Atlantic coast near Viana do Castelo eastward through Ponte de Lima. The valley floor and the granite hillsides flanking it form the main vineyard terrain, with slopes varying in aspect and elevation as the river curves inland.

Loureiro is the dominant white grape, valued for its pronounced citrus and floral aromatics. It performs particularly well in the coastal and river-valley environment, where Atlantic moisture and moderate temperatures preserve the variety's delicate perfume and acidity. Arinto and Trajadura appear in blends alongside varietal Loureiro.

The subregion produces wines that are among the most immediately aromatic in Vinho Verde. Fresh acidity, low alcohol, and aromatic expressiveness reflect both variety and climate. A small amount of red wine from Vinhão and other native grapes also carries the Lima designation.

Soils

Granite dominates the subregion's geology, with shallow, sandy, free-draining soils typical of decomposed granite terrain. River terraces add some alluvial influence near the valley floor, while hillside sites carry thinner, more mineral profiles.

Wine Styles

Fragrant, high-acid Loureiro whites are the defining style. Blended whites combining Loureiro with Arinto or Trajadura are also common. Red wines from Vinhão and other permitted varieties are produced in smaller volumes.
