Overview

Bandol AOC occupies eight communes in the Var around Bandol, Le Castellet, La Cadière-d'Azur, and neighboring coastal settlements. Vineyards descend toward the Mediterranean through a natural amphitheater of wooded hills, often on labor-intensive stone terraces known as restanques.

The Sainte-Baume massif and surrounding hills provide shelter from cold northern weather, while the sea moderates temperature. Strong sunshine supports late-ripening Mourvèdre, and sea breezes ventilate vineyards. The mistral can reduce humidity after rain, although drought, erosion, and uneven water supply remain important constraints.

Marl and limestone dominate the dry, relatively poor hillside soils. Terracing creates cultivable surfaces, limits erosion, and makes slope orientation and human maintenance central parts of the terroir rather than incidental landscape features.

Red Bandol is principally associated with Mourvèdre, supported by grapes including Grenache and Cinsault, and is known for structure and capacity to develop with age. Rosé is also important and can combine body with freshness; limited white wine completes the appellation's three colors.
