Overview

Carso DOC occupies the western edge of the Karst plateau above Trieste and the Gulf of Trieste, extending to the Slovenian border. The terrain is a rocky limestone tableland pocked with sinkholes and covered by sparse vegetation. Vineyard sites are limited, and the denomination is one of Italy's smallest by production volume.

Vitovska, a native white grape of the Karst, is the zone's most distinctive variety, producing mineral, saline whites with marked acidity. Malvasia Istriana adds aromatic breadth. Terrano, a red grape related to Refosco, produces deeply colored, firm, and earthy reds that are strongly linked to the local cuisine and culture.

The bora, a cold katabatic wind from the northeast, is a defining environmental factor. It dries grapes, reduces disease pressure, and contributes to the concentration and austerity of Carso wines. The proximity to the sea adds a moderating maritime element to what would otherwise be a harsh continental environment.

Soils

Thin terra rossa over fractured limestone is the characteristic soil, with iron-rich red clay filling crevices in the karst bedrock. Soil depth is minimal in many sites, and vine roots penetrate limestone fractures for water. The rocky, free-draining profile contributes to low yields and mineral concentration.

Wine Styles

Mineral, saline whites from Vitovska and aromatic Malvasia Istriana are the most distinctive productions. Terrano reds are deeply colored, tannic, and earthy. Some producers also make extended skin-contact whites in the tradition shared with nearby Collio.
