Friuli Venezia Giulia

Friuli Venezia Giulia occupies Italy's northeastern corner, where the Julian and Carnic Alps descend through a band of hills and terraced slopes to the Adriatic plain and coast. The region shares borders with Austria to the north and Slovenia to the east, and those cultural crossroads are reflected in its wine traditions, grape choices, and winemaking approaches.

The hilly eastern zones of Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli are the most internationally recognized, producing concentrated whites and structured reds from both native and international grapes. Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, Picolit, and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso anchor the indigenous side, while Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Merlot are widely planted.

The broader Friuli Grave plain produces the largest volume, including much of Italy's Pinot Grigio. Isonzo, Carso, and smaller denominations add further variation in soil, altitude, and microclimate. Extended skin-contact white wines, often called orange wines, have been revived here with international attention, particularly by producers in the Collio and Colli Orientali hills near the Slovenian border.
