Overview

Rosazzo DOCG occupies a compact zone of hillside vineyards in the southern part of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, centered on the historic Abbey of Rosazzo near Manzano. The terrain consists of flysch slopes at moderate elevations, with the south-facing aspects and warm microclimate typical of the southern Colli Orientali sector.

The denomination requires a white blend in which Friulano constitutes at least fifty percent of the final wine. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, and Ribolla Gialla may complete the blend. This structure produces wines with more complexity and aging potential than single-variety Friulano bottlings, while preserving the native variety's character as the foundation.

Production volume is small, and only a handful of producers bottle under the Rosazzo DOCG label. The denomination received DOCG status in 2011, making it one of Italy's newer guaranteed designations. Its significance lies in formalizing a blending tradition that several leading Colli Orientali producers had already established.

Graph links should connect Rosazzo to the parent region and to its position within the broader Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC. Friulano as the required majority variety and the abbey-centered geography are the key identity markers.

The denomination covers hillside vineyards in the Manzano area near the Abbey of Rosazzo, in the southern Colli Orientali. Slopes are moderate, with predominantly south-facing aspects that receive full sun exposure. The zone is compact and tightly defined.

Flysch soils of alternating marl and sandstone underlie the vineyards, consistent with the broader Colli Orientali geology. South-facing slopes and moderate elevation contribute to well-drained, warm soil profiles that support full ripening.

Rosazzo DOCG produces structured dry white blends anchored by Friulano, with supporting varieties adding aromatic and textural complexity. The wines are typically fuller and more ageworthy than varietal Friulano, reflecting both the blending requirement and the site quality.
