Overview

Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC occupies five communes on the Rhône's left bank around its namesake village. The landscape includes broad terraces, gentle slopes, plateaus, and lower sandy sectors near the river. Vineyards extend beyond the famous fields of rounded stones into several distinct geological settings.

The climate is hot, dry, sunny, and Mediterranean. The mistral brings strong, cool, desiccating wind from the north, reducing humidity and some disease pressure while increasing vine stress. Low rainfall, heat, wind, and water-holding differences among soils make vineyard management and old root systems important.

Grenache Noir dominates many red blends, supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Counoise, and other permitted grapes. White wines draw on Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, and additional varieties. Red and white wines are the only authorized colors.

This structure should connect the AOC to communes, lieux-dits, vineyards, grapes, producers, and wines. Soils include terraces of rounded quartzite stones over red clay, sand, sandstone, limestone, and mixed clay-limestone deposits. Stones can store heat, while sand and limestone sites offer different drainage, temperature, and rooting conditions.

Wine Styles

Red wines are typically full, warm, and complex Grenache-led blends with spice, dark or red fruit, herbs, and aging potential. Whites are broad and expressive but can retain freshness through blending, site selection, and harvest timing.
