Overview

The Rhône Valley forms a long wine corridor between Vienne and the area around Avignon. The narrow northern Rhône places vineyards on steep granitic and schist slopes above the river. Farther south, the landscape opens into plains, terraces, hills, and limestone massifs under stronger Mediterranean influence.

Northern appellations focus heavily on Syrah for reds and Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne for whites. The southern Rhône uses a much broader set of grapes, led by Grenache and supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and numerous white varieties. The mistral is a major climatic influence.

Regional Côtes du Rhône, village appellations, and individual crus create several geographic levels. This structure should direct users toward Northern and Southern Rhône places, named appellations, grapes, producers, and wines rather than implying one valley-wide blend or climate.
