Overview

Côte-Rôtie AOC occupies a narrow band of steep vineyards on the right bank of the Rhône near Ampuis, Saint-Cyr-sur-le-Rhône, and Tupin-et-Semons. Terraces climb from roughly 180 to 325 metres, and some gradients exceed sixty percent, making mechanization difficult and hand labor essential.

The slopes generally face south or southeast, capturing sunlight at the northern edge of the Rhône wine corridor. The climate is mainly continental with Mediterranean influence, regular rainfall, and some dry southerly winds. Elevation, exposure, and airflow create differences among registered lieux-dits.

Syrah is the foundation and may be co-fermented with a limited proportion of Viognier. Mica schist dominates northern sectors, gneiss becomes more prominent southward, and migmatite appears in the southeast, with fractured metamorphic bedrock allowing roots to penetrate.

This structure should connect the single cru AOC to communes, lieux-dits, terraces, vineyards, producers, and wines. Informal references such as Côte Brune and Côte Blonde describe meaningful traditions but should not be mistaken automatically for separate appellations. Producer holdings may span many tiny terraces and named places, and wines may blend them or isolate one lieu-dit. Recording those origins separately from the producer explains both blended Côte-Rôtie and site-designated bottlings while respecting the fact that every qualifying wine remains within the same cru AOC.

Geography & Climate

The appellation forms a narrow series of terraced slopes above the Rhône's right bank. Deep ravines divide hillsides and create separate exposures. Vineyards are supported by retaining walls and occupy some of the steepest cultivated terrain in France.

Soils

Metamorphic bedrock dominates: mica schist in the north, gneiss farther south, and migmatite toward the southeast. Thin, rocky, fractured soils drain rapidly and allow roots to explore fissures for water and nutrients.

Wine Styles

Côte-Rôtie produces aromatic, structured Syrah with red and dark fruit, floral, pepper, smoke, and savory development. Viognier may soften texture and lift aroma. The wines combine intensity with relatively fine tannins and strong aging potential.
