Overview

Médoc AOC lies on the northern portion of the Médoc peninsula, with vineyards positioned between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary. The broader Médoc territory also contains Haut-Médoc and communal appellations such as Margaux, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, and Saint-Estèphe, which are separate protected origins rather than subdivisions of every Médoc AOC wine.

Oceanic and estuarine influence moderate temperature, while forests help shelter vineyards from direct Atlantic weather. Gravel rises, sandy sectors, clay, and mixed alluvial deposits create differences in drainage and water availability. Cabernet Sauvignon performs strongly on warm, free-draining gravel, while Merlot is important where clay retains more moisture.

Only red wines carry the Médoc AOC. Blends typically combine Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and smaller permitted varieties, producing wines that range from approachable and fruit-driven to structured and ageworthy.

This structure should distinguish Médoc AOC from the entire Médoc peninsula and from its neighboring communal appellations. Links to estates, vineyards, grapes, classifications, and wines provide the specificity that the broad geographic name alone cannot. This distinction also prevents classification from being mistaken for appellation. Classified growth, Cru Bourgeois, Cru Artisan, and unclassified estates can occupy different Médoc AOCs, while the protected origin describes where and how the wine is produced. The appellation occupies the northern Médoc peninsula between ocean, estuary, marshes, forest, and low vineyard rises. Its terrain is generally modest in elevation but includes low ridges, flat terraces, drainage channels, and gently rolling inland sectors.

Soils

Soils include gravelly terraces, sand, clay, limestone-influenced material, and mixed alluvial deposits. Free-draining gravel favors deep rooting and heat storage, while clay-rich sectors retain more water and often support a larger role for Merlot.
