Overview

Bordeaux surrounds its namesake city in southwestern France, where the Garonne and Dordogne rivers meet to form the Gironde estuary. The waterways divide a large vineyard landscape into the Left Bank, Right Bank, and Entre-deux-Mers, with gravel terraces, limestone plateaus, clay slopes, and mixed alluvial soils.

The Médoc and Graves are major Left Bank territories, while Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, and Fronsac anchor the Right Bank. Entre-deux-Mers lies between the rivers, and Sauternes and Barsac occupy sites known for sweet wines. Regional, subregional, and communal appellations create a dense geographic hierarchy.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc shape most red blends, while Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle support dry and sweet whites.
