Muscadet Sèvre et Maine AOC

Muscadet Sèvre et Maine AOC is the central appellation of the Nantes vineyard, producing dry white wine from Melon de Bourgogne. Atlantic influence, the Sèvre and Maine rivers, varied ancient bedrock, and optional sur lie aging support fresh, saline wines and increasingly specific communal geographic denominations.

Overview

Muscadet Sèvre et Maine AOC lies southeast of Nantes on slopes above the Loire, the Goulaine marsh, and the Sèvre and Maine rivers and their tributaries. It forms the heart of the wider Muscadet vineyard and spans a rolling agricultural landscape of river valleys, ridges, and gently exposed slopes.

Melon de Bourgogne is the appellation's sole principal grape. The Atlantic-influenced climate is mild and relatively wet, with cool growing conditions, spring frost, rain, and variable harvest weather. Vineyard exposure and drainage are important for achieving ripeness while retaining the acidity central to the wines.

Ancient metamorphic and igneous formations create a complex foundation that includes gneiss, schist, granite, gabbro, and related weathered soils. Recognized communal geographic denominations identify sectors with distinct geology and stricter production and aging rules.

The optional traditional mention sur lie applies to qualifying wines kept on fine lees and bottled under defined conditions. It is a production and labeling term, not a separate appellation. This structure should likewise distinguish the broad AOC from its approved communal denominations. Links to commune, denomination, vineyard, geology, producer, aging method, and wine allow users to move beyond the generic Muscadet name while preserving the shared Sèvre et Maine regional origin.

Geography & Climate

The appellation spreads across rolling terrain southeast of Nantes, following the Sèvre, Maine, Loire, and smaller tributaries. Vineyards occupy river-facing slopes, low ridges, plateaus, and sites above the Goulaine marsh.

Soils

Weathered gneiss, schist, granite, gabbro, amphibolite, and other ancient rocks form varied shallow soils, often mixed with sand, clay, or gravel. Drainage, heat retention, and rooting differ among the appellation's communal sectors.

Wine Styles

The wines are dry, light to moderately textured, high in acidity, and commonly show citrus, orchard fruit, floral, savory, and saline qualities. Sur lie aging may add roundness, subtle lees complexity, and a slight natural prickle.
